200 Dollar Touching Fine
Although I consider myself a law abiding citizen, I have had to adjust to the new "Hands-free Law" that the City of San Antonio has put into place in the past year. Most cars are blue tooth accessible and it makes it very easy to communicate via cell phone if needed. But about 2 months ago I personally had an encounter with this law. I was pulled over by merely moving my dead phone from the console to my passenger seat. When the officer approached my car he told me that he was issuing a ticket because he saw me "touch my phone". I explained that my phone was dead and had been for at least 1 hour. I offered him the device to view it. He said "No Mrs. Jones, I do not need to see your phone. The City of San Antonio has an ordinance prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices. Therefore I am issuing you a ticket because you touched your phone." At this point I was in total shock!
I have seen some crazy things while driving. For instance I have seen women putting on mascara, drinking hot coffee, eating, writing on pieces of paper, men shaving but if you touch your phone you will get a $200 fine. I understand that being on the phone is very distracting, but all of the things that listed above are just as distracting if not more.
Let me know your thoughts on this one.
I have attached the Ordinance for your review below.
